Research Projects
Hair Analysis
The first project funded and set up by the Trust was the pioneering research into Hair Analysis as a method of detecting long term retrospective drug use.
The research, carried out at the University of Wales College of Medicine, Cardiff, began in 1992 under the tutelage of Professor Richens at the Department of Pharmacology and the full cost of the project, amounting to £100,000,was paid for by the Trust. Miss Suzanne Green, a PhD student, was elected to carry out the work, for which she gained her doctorate. It is therefore gratifying that all hair analysis work resulting from this ground breaking work stems from the work instigated, pioneered and carried out by the Trust.
In 1993 a company, Tricho-Tech Ltd, was set up by the Stapleford Trust (which changed its name to The Seagrave Trust in 2004) and Cardiff Bioanalytical Services Ltd, a company based at the University of Wales run by Professor Richens, Dr Williams and Dr Wilson. The company began its first tentative steps into the provision of a hair analysis drug testing service that year.
During this time The Trust organised a number of global conferences providing, exchanging and gaining information from around the world on the progression and use of hair analysis.
In 1996 Cardiff Bioanlytical Services Ltd regretfully rescinded its stake in Tricho-Tech Ltd which continued in the hands of Rosemary Lass and The Stapleford Trust together with Mr John Wicks, who was the Laboratory Manager during the initial research work and the infant Tricho-Tech Ltd. The Stapleford Trust finally removed itself from the company in 1999 which continued to be run by John Wicks, by now the major shareholder in the company, and Rosemary Lass until Rosemary dispensed with her final share option in 2000.
Hair Analysis is an excellent method of drug detection – being completely different from urine and saliva testing. Other companies and organisations provide hair analysis in their drug testing facilities but it is to our charity that it should be looked to for introducing and funding this amazing piece of research which has revolutionised the way in which drugs are detected, and for that we are justly proud
